 SCARLETT at the Knitting Factory
The room is packed and the crowd is starting to get restless. She takes the stage and the excitement builds. Over the sound system, she is introduced and with a belly dance and a sultry smile, she turns around and begins to sing. Scarlett Pomers is the red-headed teenager on the WB's 'Reba', and calling herself simply 'Scarlett', she is out to prove that she is more than just a pretty little actress. Her first show with her new band was a big success. Just ask the star-studded, standing room only crowd at L.A.'s Knitting Factory. She is finding her niche as she begins with Tori Amos's flair, and combines it with Alanis Morisette's attitude. Nothing showed that more that when she dedicated the song 'Used' to all of what she calls, "The people that want to be your friend just because you're on TV," and her song 'Valentine' gave us a true look into her apparently empty love life as she explains it, where her angst actually brings out the best in her singing. And though she has proven that she can hold her own on stage while playing the guitar, one of the best parts of the show was when she invited her friend Monet to sing with her. Not only could she sing, she could play the guitar and she couldn't have been over 15. I look forward to seeing her in a band of her own in the near future.
The musicians in this band were top-notch, and none could have been over 21. The drummer appeared to be the elder of the group, and his skills left nothing to the imagination as he gave it his all throughout. The second guitarist played with enthusiasm as Scarlett directed her sultry voice in his direction, and with his mop-top hair, the lead guitarist was definitely a highlight. Not much over 18, he jammed on the guitar with the enthusiasm and skill similar to that of a young Jimi Hendrix.
With well-written songs and a natural comfort in front of people, Scarlett also seems to be very humble, first thanking her audience, then the promoter, and finally of course, her "TV Family". After all, you couldn't miss the legendary Reba McEntire standing on a chair and rocking out with all of her co-stars on the side of the room. In fact, she wasn't the only one. Just about everyone got into it. You really couldn't help it. The energy was undeniable. Sheena Metal booked a new star and I can't wait to see her again.
At the ripe age of 16, 'Scarlett' as she will call herself, is well on her way to showing the world that she is more than a TV star. The little red head that went from a small part in a Michael Jackson video to a big time TV star along side a multi-platinum country music icon can rock the house, and she appears to have quite a future.
